Respecting people

Salam...

People say, respect me and I will respect you.
I heard and read the statement many times, but I don't really get it.

Why people have to respect us first,only then we respect others?
If all people thinks the same way,who wants to give the respect first?



(For me,myself,respecting others makes me feel better than people respecting me first...)
